Importance of Green Hydrogen for Türkiye

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced using electrical energy obtained from renewable energy sources (wind, solar, hydraulic, biomass, etc.). Hydrogen is gaining increasing attention in the energy sector worldwide as a zero-emission fuel source. Therefore, the production of green hydrogen is considered a sustainable energy source and plays an important role in the fight against climate change. Turkey also has a significant potential for the production and use of green hydrogen.

Turkey is one of the countries with the highest solar energy potential in the world and also has renewable energy resources such as wind energy, hydraulic energy, geothermal energy. These resources provide a suitable environment for Turkey’s green hydrogen production.
It is thought that green hydrogen will reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce air pollution and contribute to the fight against global warming. By using this potential, Turkey can make green hydrogen a priority fuel source in energy production, and as a result, it can gain significant benefits both economically and environmentally.

  • The world’s need for green hydrogen is very high. By this means, Türkiye is a candidate to become a very important player in the hydrogen market. Renewable energy and water are the two important resources required for this. Turkey, which has almost all types of renewable energy, is surrounded by sea on three sides and has underground and running waters, is a candidate country to convert these resources into added value, namely hydrogen, and become one of the largest hydrogen exporters in the world.
  • It will be able to transform the surplus electricity production into added value and financial opportunity with hydrogen production.

Türkiye will increase this hydrogen conversion and hydrogen economy opportunity and its technological capabilities.

Turkey is in a position to export the green hydrogen it produces using domestic energy resources. The ports in the country offer a suitable infrastructure for hydrogen export. Turkey’s geographical location allows it to access both European and Asian markets.
Turkey is preparing for the hydrogen economy. The country is taking a series of measures in order to increase its domestic production and to develop technologies that can be used in hydrogen production. In this context, Turkey aims to develop hydrogen technologies such as the electrolyzer that can be used in domestic hydrogen production.

In Turkey, “Regulation on Green Hydrogen Production and Use” was published in 2020. With this regulation, issues such as licensing the facilities used in the production of green hydrogen, quality standards of green hydrogen and monitoring the environmental effects of the facilities are regulated. These regulations create a suitable environment for the production and use of green hydrogen and help Turkey to evaluate its green hydrogen potential.

In the prepared 12th Development Plan (2024-2028) and MENR 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, the hydrogen issue will be handled as a priority, and targets in this direction are included.

According to the “Turkey Hydrogen Technologies Strategy and Roadmap” announced by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR) on January 19, 2023, as the latest study on this subject;

  • Reducing the cost of green hydrogen production below 2.4 US/kgH2 by 2035 and below 1.2 US/kgH2 by 2053,
  • The targets for the installed power capacity of the electrolyzer to reach 2 GW in 2030, 5 GW in 2035 and 70 GW in 2053 have been announced.

Green Hydrogen production and use; Considering Turkey’s dependence on energy imports, it will make a significant contribution to energy independence. In addition, green hydrogen production will contribute to new job opportunities and economic growth.
